This #GoodNewsFriday takes a look at a special anniversary event for a social care providers based in Kent.

Scotts Project Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting adults with learning disabilities, is celebrating its 35-year anniversary, marking a major milestone of commitment, compassion and community impact in Kent.

Established in 1990 by Jill Scott MBE, the charity has grown to become a respected provider of support for people living with a wide range of learning disabilities. To mark this significant occasion, Scotts hosted an afternoon tea on Wednesday 2 April at its site in Tonbridge.

The charity’s delivers a range of services including day service activities, supported independent living and residential homes and tailored support for individuals with conditions such as Down’s syndrome and autism.

Scotts’ day services are designed to help individuals build confidence and develop life skills. These sessions cover a wide range of activities including art, drama, dance, catering, computing and gardening. The supported independent living service, based in two well-equipped houses near the main site, enables nine individuals to live with independence while receiving support tailored to their needs. Scotts’ residential homes offer support for 15 residents across three houses.

The work of Scotts Project Trust has had a big impact the people it supports and team members. Staff describe their roles as rewarding, filled with meaningful moments and shared achievements.

To commemorate the 35-year anniversary, staff, students and residents gathered beneath a cherry tree planted by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in 1998 to mark the opening of one of the charity’s residential homes.

Kim, is a Residential Care Team Leader at Scotts, said:

There are many reasons why I love to work in social care. Firstly, every day is different and often very busy but so rewarding. The young people I work with never cease to make me smile on a daily basis, even though at times they may struggle to overcome so many barriers. To care and be apart of their lives makes me feel humble and spurs me on to want to empower them to achieve their dreams and aspirations, however small, whether that is to try an exciting new activity or simply to join in a game of bingo at our local community hall. Working alongside like-minded colleagues, especially here at Scotts Project Trust, is a pleasure as being part of a team where we all have the same goals makes it so much more enjoyable and worthwhile.

Jill Scott MBE, founder of Scotts Project Trust, said:

It is truly heart warming to see how far we have come since our inception. This celebration is not just about looking back at our achievements but also about appreciating the unwavering support from our community and envisioning a brighter future for our students.
